IS IT SAFE
Swimming with whale sharks in La Paz is generally safe and offers an unforgettable experience with these gentle giants. Whale sharks are filter feeders, primarily consuming plankton, and are known for their docile nature, posing minimal risk to humans.
To ensure safety and conservation, the Mexican government enforces strict regulations for whale shark interactions in La Paz. Only licensed operators with current permits are allowed to conduct tours, and access to the whale shark feeding zones is controlled to prevent overcrowding and stress on the animals. For instance, only 14 boats are permitted in the area at any given time, each with a maximum of five guests in the water alongside a licensed guide and a single whale shark.
Tour operators provide necessary safety equipment, including snorkel gear and flotation vests, and offer comprehensive briefings on proper interaction protocols.
Guides, often marine biologists, accompany guests in the water to ensure both participant safety and minimal disturbance to the whale sharks.
By choosing a reputable, licensed tour operator and adhering to guidelines—such as maintaining a respectful distance, not touching the whale sharks, and following the guide’s instructions—you can enjoy a safe and responsible encounter with these magnificent creatures.
SHARK OR FISH
In La Paz, Mexico, you’ll have the chance to swim with the Rhincodon typus, commonly known as the whale shark. These are the largest fish species in the world, often growing over 30 feet long, though the ones you’ll typically encounter in La Paz range from about 15 to 30 feet. Despite their massive size, whale sharks are filter feeders, meaning they primarily eat plankton, small fish, and algae, making them completely harmless to humans.
Whale sharks are known for their distinct spotted pattern, with each shark’s pattern being unique—almost like a fingerprint. The warm, nutrient-rich waters of the Sea of Cortez create an ideal feeding ground for these gentle giants, drawing them to the La Paz area every year, especially from October to April.
Swimming alongside these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat is an experience like no other, offering a rare glimpse into the world of these peaceful marine giants!
