                                                 An Incredible Experience:

Cruising out of the La Paz Bay may be compared to floating on the whisper of a warm and peaceful summer afternoon.

On the azure waters, one can see the playfulness of the pangas, alongside the powerful mega yachts, surrounded by sleepy sailboats.

The charm and beauty of historic La Paz captures nearly everyone who passes through.

This tranquility and easy nature of the Sea of Cortez sets the backdrop for all who cruise here.

It is unlike any other experience in the 7 seas.

And when the evening comes, the sunset reflecting off the smooth surface of its bay is as calm and immobile as that of a sleepy pond.

Sundown sinking into a summer siesta, which used to be the custom in this real laid-back Mexican town not so long ago.

Perfect cruising at its best in the “World’s Aquarium as Jacques Cousteau called it.

There are many good yacht charter companies in La Paz to choose from.

When choosing a boat for your next vacation or special occasion some factors need to be taken into considerations

  • Your budget. Is it realistic?
  • The size of your group
  • What is your agenda? Do you want to just lay on the bow and suntan? See the sites around Isla Espiritu Santo, Balandra Beach?
  • Are you interested in swimming with the sea lions or snorkeling or fishing?
  • Are you looking for a private cruise or are you comfortable with other people?
  • Is there a special occasion involved, birthday, anniversary, marriage proposal, all girl/guy trip?

1.  Pangas

One of the top 10 things to do in La Paz is to take a cruise on a local panga.

A Mexican tradition worth experiencing in La Paz

Mexican pangas are an extremely seaworthy passenger and fishing boat made of heavy-duty fiberglass in combination with wood. Powered by outboard motors, pangas are fast with a cruising speed of 25 miles per hour.

There are many panga rentals in La Paz, especially on the Malecon. Prices range from $75 USD per person and on up.  Sometimes you may be able to get a lower price but be weary of unscrupulous tour operators.

While you may at times experience a bumpy, wet ride, a trip on a local panga to Balandra beach and Isla Espiritu Santo can be a highlight of your La Paz visit.

Price Range $75-$130 per person or $500 upwards to rent the entire panga

2.  Small to Mid-size yachts.

To Balandra Beach

Cabin cruiser boats are smaller yachts. They are just like mobile mini vacation homes that you can use to take the entire family, couples, and small parties on waterborne adventures.

Even with small cabin cruisers you have the flexibility to visit Isla Espiritu Santo, Balandra Beach and other secluded beaches.

Enjoy the boating lifestyle, or just kick back for a day of swimming and relaxing on the water.

Most best cabin cruiser boats generally come fully-equipped for spending extended periods of time aboard, including sleeping, cooking, and bathroom accommodations—though on a boat, you always call the bathroom the “head.”

Larger cabin cruisers will have enough space for private bedrooms (we call these “staterooms” in nautical parlance), and often can sleep up to 6 people.

Bigger model cabin, or express, cruisers (30 ft +) will typically have a generator to allow full use of all accessories without needing to be plugged into shower power.

Some will include swim platforms, full enclosure options, and a comfortable ride even in rougher waters. Cabin cruisers also typically feature a dining area which converts into a berth on smaller vessels.  The larger the vessel, the more options you will find such as windlass, hot water heater, multiple berths, and more.

One of the great things about a cabin cruiser is that along with that cabin, you get all the other perks and pleasures like other larger yachts.

All of the best cabin cruiser boats have large swim platforms and ladders that make going for a dip and then re-boarding a piece of cake, large loungers and sunpads for relaxing, and decks where the kids can cast a fishing line.

Day cruising can be just as much fun as staying on the boat overnight, and truth be told, there’s little limitation on the activities you have to choose from with a cabin cruiser underfoot.

TWO POPULAR PLACES TO GO ON A LA PAZ CRUISE:

1.  Isla Espíritu Santo

Fishing Cruises

Isla Espíritu Santo, often called the Jewel of the Sea of Cortez, is a small, rocky island with over a dozen white sand beaches and crystal-clear water.

The large island 25 kilometers off the coast of La Paz is Isla Espíritu Santo, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s considered by many to be the most beautiful island in the Sea of Cortez. It boasts dozens of bays with white sand beaches and waters full of marine life.

Most travelers experience Isla Espíritu Santo on a boat day trip from La Paz.

These boat trips focus on diving and snorkeling in the waters around the island, because of the rich marine life that lives around the rock and coral reefs.

Visitors will have a chance at seeing and swimming with sea lions, orca, dolphins, manta rays, sea turtles, and blue or humpback whales.

Isla Espíritu Santo isn’t inhabited, but tent camping is permitted. This is the only way to spend any substantial amount of time exploring the island since the boat trips stop only briefly to allow some swimming and snorkeling.

Camping gives visitors the unique experience of exploring the island and waters by day and enjoy stargazing at night. There are 10 designated hiking paths on the island. They  are great for getting out in the terrain and encountering mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians. Because the islands are protected, camping requires getting a US$4 permit in advance from the SEMARNAT office (Ocampo 1045, tel. 612/128-4171).

2.  Balandra Beach

Balandra Beach is an easy pick for the most beautiful beach in Mexico.

We believe that Balandra Beach is very close to what would be the definition of perfection, because only with a first glance you will be speechless.

Its crystal-clear turquoise waters and white sand dunes are set to a desert backdrop of red-hued hills and prickly cardón cactus that dot Baja California. This makesit feel like a remote, deserted beach even though it’s only 30 minutes from the busy city of La Paz.

For some, Balandra Beach is an easy choice for the most beautiful beach in Mexico.

Balandra Beach and the surrounding area boasts 55 acres of enchanting mangrove forests, a swoon-worthy lagoon of approximately 75 acres. It boasts  majestic dunes, seemingly endless sandy beaches, small mountains, and capricious rock formations.

Mangrove forests in Balandra is one of the few in arid habitats of the world that has not been contaminated.

The calm, shallow waters of the lagoon are perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or kayaking This is a perfect way to view brightly colored fish darting by, as well as blue triggerfish, blue crabs, and herons looking for their next meal.

During low tide, a sand bar forms in the middle of the bay where you can watch the pelicans dive for a meal of sardines.

Other things to consider when choosing the right Yacht to Charter in La Paz:

  • Use Trustindex to check out all the reviews on the many yacht charter companies in La Paz. Look at the overall total ratings. No yacht charter company is perfect. But if 5 stars is in the majority, You have got a winner!
  • When possible, use a local Mexican charter company. Please support the local economy.
  • Confirm the itinerary. Many of the tours to the Isla Espiritu Santo go only to the south end of the island. For a little bit more gas money you can go to tip of the North Island.
  • There are many other beautiful beaches besides Balandra Beach. Most are private and secluded. Ask your captain to take you to a few of them.
  • To swim with the sea lions and whale sharks, you will need certified guides.
  • Read the cancellation policies carefully. During the winter months the port may be closed due to strong winds.
  • Tips are appreciated based on how the crew performed. 12-15% is suggested
  • Always ask the maximum passengers allowed. There usually is a difference in capacity based on a day or night cruise. Usually, overnight cruises will take less passengers.
  • Most La Paz Yacht charters for the day include courtesy ceviche, beer, soda and water plus other snacks as part of the price. Always ask what is included.
